Give a Child Living in Poverty a Bicycle

by Cycle Kids
United States

Do you remember your first bike? Your first trip down the driveway or to school? We give children living in situations where there is little reason to smile that same memory. Our work is focused on children living in urban, rural, and Native American communities whose lives are challenged by poverty. Riding a bike gives them a chance to feel happy and carefree.

The CYCLE Kids program was developed with research funded by the American Heart Association and conducted in collaboration with the nutrition department at Boston University’s Sargent College for Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. CYCLE Kids is partnering with RootProject to raise funds for bikes and equipment that will go directly to children living below the poverty line.

$500 buys a child a bike
$50 buys them a helmet
$10 buys them a bike lock.

The program taps into the joy of the biking experience. Children achieve personal and social growth, they desire higher levels of physical activity and gain much needed nutrition knowledge. It gives them access to mentors who can help them overcome the challenges they face from living in poverty.

In the CYCLE Kids program, students learn about nutrition, they learn how to ride a bike safely, and they get exercise. Most importantly, they get those same feelings you did when you realized your Dad had let go of the bike and you were pedaling on your own, they feel confident, excited, and proud. This is a life-changing moment for all children, but for some children, this can truly change the direction their lives will take.

Our goal is to help children with limited resources realize their potential.
Even when they don’t feel like they have any opportunities.

For the first time, Antonio, a 10 year old child who was new to his school and living in a family situation where addiction and hunger clouded each day, felt like he was good at something. Learning how to ride a bike in the CYCLE Kids program made Antonio realize he could be successful, that he had control over his life. He began letting his teachers help him. He started focusing on his academic work, making new friends, and working with adult mentors to help him acclimate to his new community. He didn’t join the gang that had been recruiting him. Learning how to ride a bike became a foundation of change for Antonio. Now, 10 years later, he is a student at a local community college. He contributes his learning how to ride a bike in the CYCLE Kids program to his achieving this goal.

Stories where a bike provides a rite of passage for a child can be seen throughout the 13-year history of the CYCLE Kids program. Teaching a child to ride a bike helps them reach outside of their comfort zone, helping them build their confidence to try new things, to tackle a tough academic subject or to reach out and make new friends.

Children living in communities with high unemployment and widespread poverty often face emotional issues that stem from social isolation, low self-confidence, and weak support systems. Programs that build self-esteem and give children access to mentors can strengthen emotional wellbeing and help a child succeed as an adult.

In addition to learning how to ride a bike, the CYCLE Kids program teaches a child important nutrition lessons to help children make healthier eating choices that are fun and simple. Take-home activities in the textbooks encourage families to learn with their children and make healthier, active choices at home. Early childhood fitness and nutrition education can prevent chronic adult diseases and help adults be successful.

Many kids are exposed to biking for the first time through the CYCLE Kids program. They love the experience of riding a bike so much, that they begin to bike to school, join afterschool bike clubs, or take advantage of bike programs offered in their community.

Our Research

Where there is knowledge there is power.  We continuously educate ourselves on how to create the greatest impact through our program.

How? We measure program impact with pre and post program assessments that determine a child’s gain in knowledge in the areas of social and personal development, riding skills, road safety, and nutrition.

Why? Results from these assessments show us how to reach further into the community and inspire children to adopt the skills from a CYCLE Kids class and integrate them into everyday life.

About CYCLE Kids

CYCLE Kids is a national organization with programs in eleven states and the Navajo Nation in Arizona, reaching 4,355 children each year, over 20,000 since inception.  Since 2004, CYCLE Kids has engaged children in physical activity to address the health and emotional issues facing today’s children.  The program is built on the belief that the simple and captivating skill of riding a bike changes lives.

What Your Donation Will Do

Our goal is to raise funds to reach more children living in poverty with the CYCLE Kids program. Your donation will give students access to a learning experience that will not only teach them how to ride a bike and how to make healthier eating choices, but will help them build confidence and self-esteem, create supportive relationships, succeed academically, and create a foundation for future success.

Your donation will provide a school with a CYCLE Kids Program. They will receive 10 mountain bikes, 25 helmets, a research based bike skills and nutrition curriculum in the form of a Teacher’s Guide and Student & Parent Textbooks, and ongoing support from the CYCLE Kids team.
